Sintered Silicon Carbide
Reaction sintered silicon carbide ceramics are also called self-bonding silicon carbide ceramics. Typical products are the commercialized materials REFEL and KT, as well as silicon-impregnated sintered silicon carbide. The plastic blank is generally made of silicon carbide powder (~5μm), carbon or graphite, and a plasticizer. It is also obtained by mixing silicon carbide powder with a plastic sintering agent. The blank is made into a green body by pressing, extrusion, grouting or other forming methods.
It can be used as a coating material for nuclear fuel, sealing parts of various types of machinery, and high-temperature gas turbine components (mainly combustion chambers) with ideal effects. In 1975, w.B.Hilling et al developed SiC/Si composite ceramics. Silicon carbide polycrystals are obtained by reacting carbon fibers (in the form of cloth mat or chopped fibers) with molten silicon. The advantage of this method is that the finished product still maintains the original orientation of the carbon fiber, and the mechanical properties are similar to those obtained by other processes.
